May the peace of Christ be with you!

As Lent rapidly approaches ( yeah - Ash Wednesday is on February 21st! ) we have ample time to reflect on how many New Years Resolutions have already been discarded and puzzling on exactly what to give up for Lent this year.

Stop rushing around for a moment and reflect on this matter between yourself and God - our loving heavenly Father. Still at a loss of what to sacrifice?

Perhaps God doesn't really care if you give up chocolates, ice-cream, alcohol, crisps/potato chips and other assorted luxuries? Jesus spent 40 days and nights fasting. This example to us is not meant to make us balk at our inadequacies but rather inspire us to turning to His help in preparing for the Passion of the Christ.

So you still can't think of what to sacrifice? How about not giving up anything? Do something more instead! Give up your time...

May the peace of Christ be with you all.

This has been a disturbing christian news week. A catholic nun was shot in the back in Somalia and three christians were executed in Indonesia. Catholic priests everywhere have had to take greater care after islamic extremists threatened to wage war on the Cross. Moslem protestors, who seem incapable of applying reason to understanding what Pope Benedict was talking about, were upsetting Catholic worshippers outside Westminister Cathedral in London proclaiming that Jesus is the slave of Allah [God] (!)

What does this all mean?

In the second reading during Sunday Mass today (James 3:16—4:3), James reminds us
"You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly"
We should take James' advice and seek the wisdom that comes from above. Through prayer, fasting and sacrifice we have the righteous weapons of God to be the effective spiritual warriors that this trouble world needs today.

Be consoled that God sees all and knows all and absolutely without doubt He LOVES ALL.
Martyrdom of our lives may not come to the majority of us, but we all are called to undergo Martyrdom in another form... martyring our sinful offences that seperate us from the graces of God.

So be not afraid...go in peace to love and serve the Lord!

Feast day of St Vincent de Paul [September 27th]
"Strive to live content in the midst of those things that cause your discontent. Free your mind from all that troubles you, God will take care of things. You will be unable to make haste in this [choice] without, so to speak, grieving the heart of God, because he sees that you do not honor him sufficiently with holy trust. Trust in him, I beg you, and you will have the fulfillment of what your heart desires" (St. Vincent de Paul, Letters).

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ.

Peace be with you all!

Site Maintenance
We have had some site updates to Anima Christi in recent weeks.
Papal Apology
As you are all intensely aware, Pope Benedict XVI has made news headlines for the wrong reasons over the last few days. An innocent speech he made during a visit in German was twisted, and bent out of all shape, causing wide-spread animosity and examples of violent demonstrations and over the top reactions from those of the Islamic faith.

How ironic in fact that nobody has done more for defending the rights and freedoms of Moslems in the West than the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict has since apologized however we are yet to see the long term effects of recent developments.

Pray, pray, pray for Pope Benedict that he always has the strength and protection of the Holy Spirit. Father, forgive the mindless reactions of fundamentalists as they attack Your Pope and Your Church. Send forth your spirit O Lord, and renew the face of the Earth! Amen.

Saint Quote
Humility and purity of conduct are the wings which raise us up to God and in a manner deify us. Remember this: the sinner who is ashamed to do evil is closer to God than the upright man who is ashamed to do good. St (Padre) Pio

"Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and preach against it; their wickedness has come up before me." Jonah: 1:2

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The above text, is prior to Sunday's First Reading, when Jonah preached to the people of the grand city of Ninevah to warn them that their city would be destroyed in 40 days. Before Jonah got to Ninevah, he decided he would circumvent God's plans for him and bought passage on a ship to avoid going to Ninevah. However God caused a great storm at sea that was only abated when the crew threw Jonah into the sea! A great sea fish swallowed him whole where he remained until he repented and was released unto the shore. A contrite Jonah then made his way to Ninevah to do God's will and God's wrath was abated after the people of Ninevah recanted, repented and changed their ways.

Fast forward to our modern times...and this week a great fish appeared in grand city, this one called London, England. Whilst this is no omen of doom, one may reflect on the readings this Sunday and ponder upon what they teach us.

Throughout the great cities of our nations...what would God's justice demand of for?
On Monday, January 23rd 2006, in Washington DC, USA there will be the 33rd annual March for Life walk in defence of the unborn and in attack on the horror of what is abortion. This evil is rife in many of our great cities that were once bastions of the Christian faith and ideals and now shamefully legalise the killing of innocent children under the disguise as a human freedom and right.

Where ever you are...in Washington DC, or anywhere else in the world... take a short walk and offer up a prayer for the unborn...pray a Chaplet of Divine Mercy... talk to God and pray for His Graces to flow through our nations so that they may be delivered from Evil. Amen.

We all see the fruits of abortion... pre-marital sex, adultery, divorce, family breakdown, pornography, impurity, birth control, euthansia... the list goes on as our cities devalue the dignity of the human person and embrace the tools of the self destruction of our Christian ideals.

If you are suffering from the fall out of these destructive forces or are finding it hard to break out of a vicious circle that leads you back into sin...take heart in God's infinite Divine Mecy. Our God is a just God. A loving God. A forgiving God. Ask Him in prayer in faith and He will grant to you what is best for you. If you do not have faith, He will give it to you. If you find it hard to remain pure, He will help you. His Mother will help you. If you do not know how to pray...He will teach you :-)

Remember the blessed words of St Pio : Pray, hope...don't worry! and may the peace of God be with you throughout every aspect of your life.

Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This has been a very sad week for countless thousands through the wrath of hurricane Katrina, flooding in Europe, the terror scourge that caused hundreds of pilgrims in Baghdad to be killed by trampling and the first anniversary of the siege of Beslan that left 331 dead, 186 of them children. It's a stark reminder of Jesus' words that nobody knows the day or hour of their passing. It isn't only in poorer countries that people are at the mercy of the forces of nature. It underscores our humanity and hopefully will sober the lukewarm to turn to God in humility and no more defiance.

Let us pray to Our Heavenly Father for His infinite Divine Mercy to welcome the dead into heaven, bless the survivors with peace and give them respite from their sufferings and protect the many trying to bring, law and order and medicine and aid to the regions.
Saint Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord, that each time the following prayer was said, one thousand souls would be released from purgatory:

"Eternal Father I offer you the most precious blood of your Divine son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

There is plenty of work for the Christian to do. We are called to live apart from the world and not to succumb to its many enticing distractions. Pope Benedict this week has appealed that people in the West, especially Europe open their hearts and minds to the gift of more children to bring blessings and hope to our societies whose populations are in decline as is their faith declining in God.

The family is the current battleground between the forces of good and evil. Is it any suprise that the devil is putting it under such tremendous strain and attack? Divorce, couples living together outside marriage, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, promiscuity, ever increasing apathy and luke-warmness to organised religion, and the dark cloud of same-sex unions further erode away at the social unit that God Himself planned for us, to prepare and guide us for heaven!

We are all called to evangelize to others, yet what good message can we share if we can not even set a good example in our own families? We do not even need words or are required to perform great acts to be both pleasing to God and active participants in the building of God's Kingdom here on Earth. Be a shining lamp for Christ to those in your community, those in your workplace and more importantly to those in your own family...and offer up your sufferings to the Our Lord, instead of dwelling excessively upon them. Heaven is ours for the taking if we but keep faith and be true beacons of Christ in all that we do, and when we inevitably fall...don't give up...keep persevering and above all keep even closer to the Blessed Sacraments! :-)

Blessings,

The Anima Christi Team

July 25th 2004,

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ.

Family
It is something we perhaps take for granted but we are all part of the Mystical Body of Christ through the grace of our Baptism. We are all spiritually brothers and sisters where ever we are in this troubled world. Our neighbours are not just those who share the location where we live. Mary is our spiritual mother and what a patient, kind and loving mother she is, despite all the many times we go astray from Our Lord. Jesus is our brother, our teacher and our friend who is waiting for us all to allow Him to lead us to our Father in Heaven. Let us pray that we all remain in a state of grace for as much as possible, welcoming the Holy Spirit into the temple that is our body and outpouring the many graces that God gives us on those around us.

Purpose
At mass today in the Gospel we see Abraham bravely questioning God about the injustice of destroying the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, punishing the just amongst the unjust. Abraham negotiates with Our Lord, who agrees that if there were even ten good people exist in that city of evil, He will spare it. As it turns out though those ten are not to be found and the ciry is destroyed.

Every day we attend mass, we are counted as one of those good people, the just servants of God. We are ambassadors and intercessors for our families, our communities, our nations...in fact this very world. Every prayer we say, every sacrifice we make, all the love we out pour...it is all seen and acknowledged by God our Father. God is good all the time. May we go about our lives accepting all the injustices that come our way...offering them up to God, and carrying our crosses faithfully.

It is not enough to stop in our faith journey following God, claiming that we have done enough and now it is time to break and think of oneself. All that we earned before will be lost in an instant. Christanity is a life long commitment...just ast Christ's life and death was a commitment to our Salvation despite the pain and suffering that Jesus refused to pass... so that He could redeem each and every one of us. Our rewards are not limited just to when we enter heaven...we are constanly blessed by God in our lives...if we just  open our eyes and see.

Community
Thanks be to God, we are gaining more members daily and our chatroom service is now taking off again and offers you all another method to interact with others in our online community. Thank you for all of those who are sacrificing their time to sit in the room to welcome chatters.

We will be resuming our Divine Mercy prayer our again at 11:30pm UK, (6:30pm EST)  daily.
Also from next Sunday (August 1st, we will be starting a beginners bible study course). All are welcome!

Please pray for our work at Anima Christi that we can continue to help those learn and enjoy more about their faith and their God. We exist for you. We are one of your resources to go out and touch those in the world around you. Without your participation, we are very limited in what we hope to achieve.

God bless and wishing you all for every peace, grace and happiness that God has to offer.

Anthony and the Anima Christi Team.

July 2nd, 2004

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Lean on me

June has come and gone....and with respect to this news column, so did April and May before I remembered to update it! :-O

Apologies for not keeping up to date with it. Please help keep me on my toes... and do also continue to keep contributing on the message board.

I remember a question that a good friend of mine, Tony Valek, asked me several years ago which confounded me at the time.

Why did Jesus send out his disciples in two's preparing the way?

"After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Luke 10, 1-2)

Now it wasn't for companionship and it wasn't for protection.
Quite simply it is for each to be a witness to each other, to point out errors in what they say or important ommisons. We can do a lot by ourselves but there are often times that we are deflated, tired or forgetful...and that is where a companion can jump in and fill the holes and provide that burst of enthusiasm that is so important to get us going again.

There is of course a deep spiritual benefit of being in two's ... as Jesus promises us:

"Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:18-20)

So next time I don't get something done, just squeak at me, and I will do my best to deliver ;-)

...and the last shall be first...

I just finished updating the calendar events for July, with important feast days of Saints. You can access this by clicking on the Calendar link on the top right of the message board when you first log in.

Reflecting on my work something struck me.... the several saints of this month remind us we don't have to be super-human, or without doubts, or overly zealous in our faith, or spotless from sin, to win God's favour and join him in heaven. The majority of saints spend their lives doing the nitty gritty day in day out stuff. Many have sinned quite spectacularly, yet they ultimately choose God and not the path of sin.

St Thomas... We all know he doubted Jesus rose from the dead, but more importantly he was the first to publically acknowledge Jesus' divinity - "My Lord and my GOD!"

St Maria Goretti... A 12 year old child, who had the will-power not submit to rape and in return was stabbed to repeatedly. On her deathbed she still had the grace to forgive her assailant. He was unrepentant and sentanced to 30 years in prison, and did not repent and reform until Maria appeared in a dream to him, presenting him flowers. Purity and forgiveness two immense graces which St Maria was abundant in.

St Mary Magdelene... was a notorious sinner, who at the sight of Jesus felt sorrow for her deeds. She washed his feet with his tears and wiped them dry with her hair. Her faith not only saved her through forgiveness...she had the strength of will to remain at the foot of the cross, unafraid of what might happen to her, and was rewarded when she was the first to discover that Jesus was risen! The power of faith...

St Martha... she chose to serve and be distracted with worldly things and missed hearing the words of Jesus that are truely more important. She learns however from this and the next time they meet. Whilst mourning for her brother, Lazarus, she gets up and leaves everything to see Jesus, who is the area and raises Lazarus from the dead. Mary is a servant.. as Jesus came to serve for us...so too as Catholics are we servants, not lords of others...as we guide them to His one tru Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Let's take good example from these quite normal people, which we can all identify with at least some of their faults and we can only pray for all of their virtues! Faith is a journey...take one day at a time and trust in God to do the rest :-)

May God bless you all and keep you and yours safe,

Anthony
